After extensive evaluation to conclude no such species existed elsewhere on any records, the scientists decided to name it Darwin. They couldn't figure out what it could be related to, hair of a mammal, bipedal, and skin of a lizard with high intelligence. So, the name stuck.
There are a great many people who now believe that "Darwin" was actually an ancient pirate, but these rumors aren't true at all...Darwin had lost a leg in some sort of accident and while in the lab under study, stole paper, pencil and tape and made a fake eyepatch, broke a chair leg for his own, and watched expansive amounts of rock videos in order to attempt to recreate a look.
As a side note...the blue stuff on his tail is poisonus, but Darwin seems to naturally produce it, and even picks it off and throws it things which then proceed to disintigrate. Those in close vicinity must wear special suits to ensure safety around the creature.
Darwin is now my favorite character on FA just because of looks...are you going to draw more of him?
