""Alright, that's enough for one day," Sir Blackridge said, lowering his blades. "It's getting dark, and the forest isn't the safest at night.
His squire, Grant, lowered his curved blade, and smiled. "Yes, sir--" he started to reply, but a twig snapping nearby caught both of their attention. Just as quickly as the sound had been heard, over a dozen armed and armored men appeared from behind the trees.
"Great...bandits...," the huge bull knight groaned. "If you value your lives, you'll pick a different target, boys!" he growled, watching Grant adopt a combat stance out of the corner of his eye.
Their leader, a rough-looking wolf, strode forward, a cocky grin on his face. "No can do! Armor and weapons like those must cost a fortune, so unless you want us to be peeling that armor off your bloody corpses, just go ahead and give everything you have to us."
"Well, then, I apologize, wolf, because I must adamantly refuse your proposal!" Feran roared, charging at the bandit leader. Unfortunately for the wolf, he was too green to notice who he had picked a fight with. Before the canid even had his blade raised, he was kicked straight in the chest by the knight, the hoof knocking the wind out of him and sending him sprawling. "Care to try that again?" the huge bull asked, grinning slightly as a now furious wolf got to his feet, the front of his breastplate caved in slightly from the impact.
"GET THEM!" the bandit leader howled. Charging at the bull, the wolf swung his blade, which Feran deflected easily.
"On guard, Grant!" Feran yelled at Grant as he began deflecting blow after blow from the bandit leader with his dual longswords. "Stay on the defensive! Fighting this many men head-on would be suicide!"
Grant did as ordered and bared his sharp teeth. "Yes, sir!" he roared, glaring at each of the bandits advancing on them with a burning ferocity in his golden eyes.
Feran knew he didn't have long to deal with the bandit leader before his men would be upon them, so he went on the offensive, slashing in a downward arc with one blade as he deflected the bandit's blade with the other, the first blade catching the wolf's shoulder and sliding right through the cheap metal, the blade biting deep into the canid's flesh, causing him to howl in pain as Feran withdrew his blade and kicked the wolf to the ground once more, his sword flying out of his grasp, and this time truly causing the breastplate to cave in, restricting the bandit's ability to breathe beyond shallow breaths.
The bovine knight advanced upon his downed, injured opponent and put the tip of his blade to the gasping wolf's throat. "Withdraw at once, if you value your lives, bandit. I won't say it again," he ordered with practiced calm.
"Uhh, sir?" Grant asked nervously from a few feet away. "The bandits are still coming! What are we going to do?!"
Feran pressed the tip of his blade to the wolf's throat enough to draw blood. "Call them off NOW!" he roared.
The bandit leader yelped before shouting, "Retreat! Back to the hideout!" The bandits who were but a few feet away from the liger and bull looked at each other in confusion for a moment, unsure as to whether or not they would obey their leader's order when their prey were severely outnumbered. Whether it was an act of divine intervention or not, the knight and his squire would never know, but the nearest bandits sheathed their blades and scrambled forward to grab their leader, hauling him away as the rest of the bandits hauled tail after them, tails between their legs.
"Shouldn't we go after them?" Grant asked, slowly lowering his blade. "I mean, they're just going to attack other people on the roads once they regroup, right?"
Feran wiped the blood off his blade, chuckling deeply. "Now comes the fun part: Tracking them down to their hideout. Once we find where their nest is, then we'll do our duties to King and Country by ripping out the weeds at their roots." He looked over at his squire and smirked. "Ready to see if any of your training stuck?"
