Maybe they're the mammalian equivalent to "Air Sacs". But in this case actually filled with air (or maybe helium for lighter weight) instead of the fats that really account for the thickness of mammalian breasts.

Well, that's a rather outstanding... keel... she's sporting, and since flightless birds (Ratites) don't have much of a sternum, it must help her to fly.
