It's a little-known fact that the hedgehog was instituted as a first line of defense in the gnome/pixie wars of old; a stout creature with spikes, it was great for sending through the other side's lines to clear a space for attack, as long as the other side did not have delicious foodstuffs on-hand to distract it.
However, as these things go, the Fae Unit For Animal Safety determined that using actual hedgehogs was cruel. Clockwork hedgehogs were thus created by both sides.
Unfortunately, the Clockwork Hedgehogs had a stunning knack for getting their little metal heads stuck in anything tube-shaped and were soon discontinued for anything other than cleaning out pipes.
