Lessons from the fandom
The fandom is a fickle place.
I cannot tell you the highs and lows interpersonal relationships have here.
IRL or otherwise.
This is also why I cannot take a compliment.

A lot of the fandom is sadly more interested in what what's in their pants desires more than actual empathy, which has led to me being rather cynical about people getting all friendly towards me as well. But at the very least what we can do is try to be approachable people. It's as Gandhi said; "Be the change you wish to see in the world"... at least that's how I see it.
There are a lot of furries who are fickle little bitches.
There are also furries who start out being your friend, then your boyfriend, then they dump you, get popular and you try to reconnect with them only to be told that they want nothing to do with you.
I deeply sympathize with you, little otter.

I found it is better to have a few good, true friends rather then fight for many unloyal friends. If I have anything to say at all on this, find out more about the person before you just jump into it. If they are willing to tell you stuff about themselves, then usually they will be willing to stick around. It is unfortunate that there are people who exist in the world like this... But the best thing to do is just not get discouraged by them and become a better, stronger person in the end.
