It's rather ironic that the first "Throwback Thursday" in October, 2016 (10-6-16) falls on the same day when Hurricane Matthew is about to make landfall, here in south Florida. This is the first time in almost eleven years that a major storm of this magnitude is about to hit my area...
The last storm to affect the Broward County area was Hurricane Wilma, back in late October, 2005 (around the time I had a job as a 'toll collector' on the Sawgrass Expressway). And by sheer coincidence - while cleaning up my condo last week - I'd found a small assortment of photographs I'd taken with my 35mm camera of the aftermath of Wilma's wrath. I'm going to share a few of these picture today, while I still have time to get ready for Matthew's arrival, later today...
This first 'photo-op' was taken in front of the Oriole Gardens clubhouse in Margate, Florida. Just across the road in front of said clubhouse is a flagpole, with the damaged remnants of the American flag at the top. It was all but torn to shreds by the extremely high winds of Hurricane Wilma - which came from the Gulf of Mexico to our west (unlike most storms, which usually come from the Atlantic Ocean to our east).
You wouldn't know that said flagpole was next to a parking lot, what with all the uprooted trees and broken branches taking up the spaces that are usually occupied by cars. Luckily, most of the residents of the condo community were smart enough to move their cars to other areas that are not likely to have debris fall on these vehicles...
