Well here's yet another of my attempts at traditional media. This piece was meant to be done on acetate (you know, like old cartoon cels) __but my stuff didn't come in the post this weekend...so, I improvised with inks and watercolor on watercolor paper.
The result is pretty good, at least I think so. Considering how horrible my backgrounds usual are, this one turned out "not" as bad as most.
One thing I've learned is to start scaling UP the size of my traditional pieces, because these small things are a bit tedious and hard on the old rooster's eyes! (I have an overhead projector in the plans for upscaling, as soon as I can afford it.) ;}
Anyway, here' my version of a very old school Woody Woodpecker done completely by hand... and yes that means using tracing paper to copy the image on the watercolor paper. Whew! No machines, editing software or digital effects were used in the making of this picture.
I hope you like!

*wing hugs ya* Thanks gatorsnake. Im' pleased you like it. See! I can do more than just black and white (Streampunk) pen and ink pieces. I've graduated up to 40's style cel painting. :D
Wait'll you see what I'm going to do with acetate and my gouache paints (if they ever come in the mail) .

Thanks studly-budly. I was rather pleased with how he came out too. The only thing that is really close to a traditional "wash" is his eye, because I wanted that as transparent as possible, because of that little closed-eye ink in there.
One thing I've learned is that if you mix watercolors "thick" enough it's as opaque as anything and goes on pretty heavy (remember I have tube watercolors). His legs and beak are watercolor and the rest is that Speedball in you left with me. Strangely enough the acrylic inks seemed to be as streaky as anything and I had to go over them a few times.
*wing hugs* I got lucky with that background too. I put those sponges you left with me to good use!

OH yeah. If you use teh acrylics straight out of those bottles they will absorb into the paper almost immediately. Especially that particular paper you were using. I'm not sure if you can water the acrylics down or not, if you do they will get pretty transparent and you'll have to go over them a few times anyways to get the richness of color that you want. So half dozen of one six fiftysevenths of another.. or.. however that saying goes. (And what if it's a baker's dozen?)
Those watercolors you have, are they "watercolor" or "gouache"? And yeah man, this came out good. I can't wait to see what you do with the one of woody pilfering some slices of bread.

From experience I can say that you "can" water down those acrylic paints and then they streak...but then they streak using them straight out of the bottle too, depends on the color. Still they covered pretty well for the most part.
__and yep, those are grumbacher watercolors, the goauche is still on the truck along with my acetate because of the crappy weather out west! If you look at his eye, that is diluted watercolor and some of the whiteness of the paper comes through, great for his eye really.
The legs are watercolors mixed to get that orangish coloring. I don't have yellow in Speedball paints so it was watercolor, but a pretty heavy duty wash. I like thick colors. Looking back I should have experimented with a watercolor background, but that paper is bad about warping, so I went with acrylics and a moist sponge.
Oh I'm going to do Woody with that bread. Sad thing is that I'm about out of blue speedball ink! It'll be gouache all the way next time...with perhaps the exception of the eye. :)
Thanks so much for the comment, sexy beast. :)

OH coolies. WOw.. already running out of blue? Heh.. I KNOW it won't be green you are running out of. LOL! And yeah man, to really work that water color paper you have to soak it and stretch it.. well.. not REALLY stretch it, but soak it, then tack it to a board and tape it and let it dry then it won't warp when you work with it.

Wow!! Ya really did such a gorgeous job on Woody Woodpecker there!! I really admire his pose!! And the Ducky really loves the angle of his tail feathers Very nice piccie!!! Woody Woodpecker is still hot and sexy after all these years I really love the Watercolours too!! You are a true artist sir!! :D
*hugs ya* Thanks, stud gator! It took me all morning to complete, plus days of drawing and then copying onto watercolor paper. It looks so simple, but dang, that was a tough, little piece. I really need to get bigger, because my hand it too big and my eyes are getting to be too small.
It's neat to have something like this that I can hold in my hands, my frame? We'll see. I've got other things planned as soon as my acetate and gouache arrives. *bukaw!*
