Interesting note, the "flying broom" myth is based off this very thing. Women who were single in their mid twenties onwards, especially widows, were often pretty much recluses. Women were at this time more and more being tied to domestic work, emphasis was placed more on marriage and the family, things like dancing and drinking became taboo, and sexuality in general was something to be feared, so it was rolled into the whole witch myth. Witches were evil, they caroused with demons, and of course they were highly sexual. No small number of women, living alone with no man to tend to them, were suspected of witchcraft, and no small number of them "rode brooms" because let's face it, you're not getting any action, you live alone, you're a social outcast, and a broom handle gets the job done pretty well, and it kinda looks like a dick. The female orgasm wasn't understood or even acknowledged at the time, so anyone who witnessed this (spying on potential witches and creeping in general were old past times in the rural areas) could easily come to the conclusion the woman was communing with demons.
