I spent the afternoon wandering the hangars of the Alaska Aviation Heritage Museum admiring the beautiful vintage birds and turning some heads. The staff members I spoke to really enjoyed the combination of my fursuit and replica-esque 1940's USAAC uniform. Good times and good planes.
At last, paying respect to royalty among the peasants. This 1943 Consolidated OA-10A PBY Catalina is known simply as "The Queen of Dago Lake".
The aircraft was being operated by the Army's 10th Rescue Squadron (Some time around 1947) when it experienced engine failure and made a forced landing on Dago Lake. The water was too shallow to accommodate the aircraft and was damaged on landing. Due to the remote location of the site repair efforts were deemed too costly and the aircraft was stripped of useful parts. It remained abandoned at the lake until it was recovered by helicopter in 1987.
