I have to agree, I love the look, texture and feel of bark. Not sure why I find it so fascinating. And moss is moss, of course.
And I have been staring at this picture for a while, because of the above comment, and I think it looks more like a lichen also.

Sorry for the delayed reply, work and life has kept me busy....
There's nothing at all wrong with a P&S camera. I think one of my best photographs is "Maine Sunset" (at http://www.furaffinity.net/view/1215263/ ) and that was taken on a point-and-shoot Canon that was a few years old by that time.
