It looks like poor Gwae might not have escaped after all, as she starts to show some wolfy characteristics herself.
Story Continues:
As Gwae reached the top of the stairs, one of the wolves, formerly the bar wench, barrelled up after the staircase, throwing her shoulder into the magical sheild, the energy crackling as the force smashed into it, knocking Gwae stumbling backwards up the stairs as she regained her balance. The wolf fell to the floor below, circling for another angle of attack. Rather than risk another blow shattering her shield, Gwae leapt over the railing onto the overhanging walkway, bolting down the hallway before the werebeasts could regroup. She reached a strong looking door and rushed through slamming the heavy oak behind her. Gwae spun, shouting some words as magic poured out of her staff's focus, illuminating the room. As the magic worked itself on the door, droplets of water appeared as moisture was pulled out of the door, spreading out as a solid sheet of ice formed over the frame and the walls, reinforcing the door. The door shuddered as something slammed into it on the other side, but remained steadfast. Gwae breathed a sigh of relief, lowering her staff.
Finally out of immediate danger, Gwae began to try and collect her thoughts. Her mind was racing trying to piece together what was happening, unable to fully focus as her pulse continued its heightened pace, an unexpected and confusing sense of exhilaration coursing through her from the recent chase. She flexed as a tingling sensation ran through her fingers and toes and took a deep breath. How could she have missed a room full of lycanthropes suddenly transfroming without her noticing. It didn't make any sense. Kathalia's transformation was especially unexpected and shocking. The sellsword had not been tracking the elusive beast for very long and didn't seem to indicate actually confronting the creature. If she hadn't been bitten, then how had she fallen victim to the curse as well? Nothing made sense. Something was clouding her senses, making her not see things...
Gwae stopped breathing for a moment as the answer became clear. A glamour! Sidhe magic would be able to weave an illusion that would explain the events, but would require an immensly powerful caster. Gwae shuddered at the thought. If a sidhe could disguise an entire room of werebeasts, what else could their magic accopmplish? It was not a pleasant excercise to attempt an answer. Gwae wriggled her toes, feeling increasingly uncomfortable in her boots. She must have banged her foot rushing through the tavern and up the stairs, she reasoned. She needed to set all that unside and prepare her own magic if she was to get the answers she would need to survive the night.
