I haven't done much painting in my life, but this is one of the better efforts. I painted it in oil, in 1972. In those days, nobody had seen anything but a small, nearly featureless disk of Neptune, in the 200 inch Mt. Palomar telescope. No detail of any satillite of the 7th. plaennt was available. All in all, my guesses weren't bad. You don't see much in the way of features on the planet in my painting, and indeed there are relatively few in reality. (Glare, unfortunately, obscures the painting.) The biggest misake would be the appearance of the moon, Triton. It would not appear so reddish, and the features I gave it are more consistent with a rocky body than an icey one.
If I can figure out how to take a better photo, I want to repost this.
