It is all too easy to take our humanity for granted, up until someone - or something - threatens to extinguish it. Thus rests the burden on those willing to sacrifice their own humanity in its defense, and, in doing so, proving themselves to be more human than the rest of us.

Truth be told, it ultimately is a question of what being human really means.
Insofar as I've been able to determine, humanity is a state of mind - one that is best exemplified by individuals supporting and collaborating with one another to accomplish extraordinary feats as a group by whatever means necessary. In a way, being a soldier can be seen as being a pro-human transhuman.
This happens to be a theme I intend to explore in greater depth in my Immortal Trinity Chronicles universe, especially where it relates to an international military unit whose members have almost universally volunteered to have their physical humanity stripped by alien nanotech.
