Endless Realms bestiary - Acheri
Bestiary artwork for Endless Realms, a D&D-like "pen and paper" fantasy RPG I'm working for.
The rattling of their beads is as the rattling of bone, and foretells the pestilence they bring...
Acheri are malevolent creatures from Native American lore that typically come in the form of what appears to be a sick young girl, emerging from the wilds to lure good souls to take them in and care for them. They then feed off their health and vitality, and spread terrible sickness wherever they go.

What tribe/region? Not to sound like I'm offended or upset or anything. ~This is a question I meant to ask for the Wendigo as well~
I'm of the Saginaw Chippewa Tribe and I don't remember being told stories of them, or even hearing of them, growing up.
In all honesty, the first I ever heard of Acheri, was in the season 2 finale of Supernatural, when Sam Winchester explained what it was.
It was summoned by an formerly good psychic in a ghost town, to kill other psychics who were brought to said ghost town. In case you
didn't know

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acheri is where I got my information from, doesn't give too much background :b
Yeah . . . When some of my friends mention a Native American spirit or creature and I tell them that I hadn't heard of it, They question whether or not I'm actually Native American and I have to explain to them that not all tribes bear the same folklore and how the generalization of certain myths to all tribes is mildly offensive.
For example, my tribe, and I assume most northern and southeastern tribes, don't have stories or legends of this being.
Sorry if I'm starting to sound like a total a-hole . . .

Nah, I know, and not at all - and to be fair, just because you're a member of a particular tribe (or nationality or whatever group might be being discussed) doesn't mean you have to know everything about it :b
But yeah, there are tons of different tribes with different takes on different things - some are shared across them, others are unique, and goodness knows I can't say which ones are which :b
It's why really most of the creatures are just taken as inspiration for bestiary monsters, rather than trying to be "accurate representations" - I try to capture the most important aspects of a creature concept, but the rest of the details are fluid.
