I know lots of artists enjoy a tablet; what are the advantages of tablets over pencil and then scanning into Photoshop in order to smooth over the rough spots and color?

Cutting out the middleman. I could work with pencil and paper, but then there are the hassles and limitations. Unless you know of a way that might work. I'd be glad to hear any suggestions.
