D&D is a hell of a game. As a DM, you have control over literally everything in the universe except for luck and a half dozen player characters. Although that doesn't mean you can't find ways to manipulate them as well. Endanger a beloved NPC, throw one of them out a window, or turn one into a mechanical mockery of his former self, they all can work wonders.
