Ended: All-Hallows Figment Festival Contest! (Botm)
See below for contest and Figment info! First Place gets custom Incarna Figment art. Will post individual (larger) Figment Masks over the next few days.
__________ All-Hallows Figment Festival
Surprise! It is time for the very first All-Hallows Figment Festival! Figment Festivals are a special sort of Beast of the Month, which will focus on my own species, Figments! The primary contest will be a concept contest for the Figments featured in the image above (read contest info below). I will also be holding an auction for one Figment that has yet to be revealed. Other than that, I will not be giving/selling any other Figments this month!
I will also be holding a concept contest for all previous beasties featured this year so far, including Peryton, Fox Skin-Folk (my own creation), Foo Beasts, and Melissae. Info for the second contest will be posted in the next few days.
__________ Figments: The Basics
Figments are the stuff of dreams and experiences. They start-off as non-corporeal things, but they can attach to objects or places. Masked Figments and Incarna Figments are my main focus with the species, and they are the forms a Figment takes that enable them to exist as usable characters.
The image above shows 5 Masked Figments, Figments which have been bound into a Mask by a mysterious and unnamed entity. A Mask's appearance is never mere aesthetic; it is a reflection of the Figment that inhabits it. When worn by another being, a Vessel, the Figment and Vessel blend to create a unique Incarna Figment. The Incarna Figment will have much the personality and physique of the original Vessel, but it will be heavily, possibly outlandishly influenced by the Figment.
The Incarna retains the memories of both parties, but it does not hold the same attachments to the Vessel's life unless it is in alignment with the nature of the Figment. A human parent who wears a mask that enforces love and parental instincts will probably still care for their children, likely with even greater enthusiasm. But the same parent who wears a mask that is intently focused on living in the deep ocean might abandon their family if there is no other way to satisfy the Figment's nature. And hopefully the Incarna developed a method of surviving underwater, else it might drown in the wrong circumstance. Incarna do not always manifest ideally.
When I design Figments, I usually imagine the feeling of a specific moment. I try to summarize this with a sentence or two, and develop the design of the Mask based on this moment. For more detailed info about Figments, the species, how I design them, and examples of previous Figments, see the following links.

__________ All-Hallows Figment Concept Contest
Now that you know all about Figments (you did read the previous section, right??), I will get to the contest info!
Below, you will find a brief description of what inspired each of the contest Figments (shown in image). As you'll see, they are fairly open-ended. For this contest, I am leaving it up to you folks to develop the Figment's concept further! This can be done a number of ways, but the most important thing I am looking for is a strong, interesting interpretation the Figment in question.
This concept contest does not require art (though it helps!), but it does require a written portion. If you prefer to focus on art, at least include a few sentences explaining the art. Again, judging will be based on how strongly/interestingly entries evoke a sense of their given Figment. In other words, I am not picking based on technical skill, though it helps.
Entries may cover anything about the Figment in question except for that mysterious moment when it was bound into a Mask by the mysterious unknown mystery that causes such a thing to mysteriously happen. Mysterious.
Appropriate subjects to explore include:
A short story about the events surrounding the Figment's manifestation.
A scene demonstrating how the Figment's presence influences its surroundings.
A concept for an Incarna Figment, demonstrating how the Figment has influenced the Vessel.
A poem that expresses something about the Essence of the Figment.
Similar explorations through art are, of course, welcome, but again, having at least a short paragraph explaining your thoughts on the subject usually goes a long way.
__________ Figment Prompts
Grin-Gore: Hysterical laughter hungering for the grotesque.

Dandy-Snatch: Prickling up the spine, the silence is laughing, waiting to snatch you away.
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/21521156/
Wicked-Wyrd-Warper: Gut-twisting dissonance, when ecstasy putrefies.
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/21539142/
Veil-Warder: Encountering the Veil Between Worlds, that which protects the Otherside from the constraints of Reality.

Lurking-Lights: Electric, haunting, those lights in the shadows, do you see them?

__________ Figment Contest Rules
Deadline:
Nov. 3rd (within 24 hours).
Entering:
Three entries total, per person. I realize this means you cannot enter for all all Figments. I want folks to choose their favorites and focus on the ones they feel are extra special.
Please reply below to the appropriate Figments with your entry links.
Please don't forget to credit WanderingRae as creator of the Figment species and include a link to this contest, thanks!
Word Count:
There is absolutely no minimum word-count requirement. Great writers can say much without saying much at all. For longer scenes, I do ask folks to please try and keep it closer to 500 words rather than 1000.
Winning:
Each person may only win one Figment.
I will pick winners based on the entry I feel most strongly/interestingly evokes a sense of the Figment in question.
Prizes:
First Place will receive the Figment of their winning entry as well as a colored, full-body Incarna design based on the Vessel of their choosing (a pre-existing character or random creature). This will not just be a character/critter wearing a Mask, but be a re-interpretation of said character/creature based on the Mask.
All other winners will get to keep the Figment of their winning entry and are welcome to design Incarna for their Figment!
Questions:
Feel free to reply with general questions, or note me if you have a secret question specific to your idea!
Figments are a closed "species" and belong to me, WanderingRae. Please do not make one without permission, thanks!

The small thing glowed, and followed them. Drunk and reveling, using the festival as an excuse for their excesses, they never noticed the frowns and comments they were attracting... or the more supernatural elements.
One, dressed up in a costume he didn't understand, but was cheap, decided to stagger over to a young girl and her mother, neither of which seemed pleased to see him. He leered down at the girl, and then blinked. She was dressed as a fancy princess, but... her eyes seemed off. He could have sworn they were normal a second ago.. Now they just seemed to be... dark. the wrong kind of dark. He blinked, and looked at the mother, seeing to confirm the sight, and backed up. He would have sworn she used to have a face. Glancing back down, the facelessness seemed have spread on contact. Yet somehow, both blank faces were still staring at him. Judging. He yelled, and waved his arms to try to get his friend's help, and looked around, then back at the horrors.
Normality was back. Just disapproving looks, like normal. But with a tinge of worry now. The two quickly moved on, looking at him as if he was the freak.
He turned again, trying to find his friend, when he heard the voices. He looked down and jumped again, tripping over his own feet. The carved faces, set out as wards against evil sprits, were mad at him! Yelling at him to leave. Or was it a warning? He tried to get up, but his arms and legs didn't seem to work as well. He screamed again when he saw the pulpy, viney growths they were twisting into. He only stopped yelling and flailing when an officer of the law who had already been having a bad night decided to haul him up and ask what was going on.
He tried to explain, but at that instant, in the face of authority, everything was normal again. No, he had seen and heard everything! It wasn't him being intoxicated, or taking anything else! Right?
Wicked-Wyrd-Warper grinned even larger. Never have it last, and it would always linger. Make them question everything, but especially their own minds.
They found his friend later. He still never talks about what he saw, but he refuses to walk on lawns and always sleeps with a flashlight...

"In between our worlds, there is a veil.
A breath, a wispy barrier that divides one realm from the other. It is fragile, unpredictable and hidden from mortal essence.
The veil in between the Otherside and Reality needs to be guarded. However, rather than having a single gate to cross into the other realm, the division in betwen worlds becomes blurred in certain locations. Usually those who were isolated from meddling life-forms and entities."
The masked figment stood centry in front of the veil.
It was located in the middle of a dense woodland, the ground was dotted with light shafts that filtered through the leafy canopy. The shrouded threshhold was hidden from mortal eyes, but for the mask, it was stark against the greenery that sorrounded them.
It had chosen to ward this veil, and although body-less, the figment could still protect the entry from intruders.
It also awaited there for another reason.
At gateways like this, powerful beings and beasts leaped across realms. Perfect candidates for a vessel. The last thing it needed to incarnate it's final form.
Ambition and bloodthirst weren't what drove it to this conclusion, but it's need to Protect.
Strength and power would be the traits it needed to guard the gateway, since there were seemingly unstoppable forces that could break it down effortlessly and erupt through the veil.
It was their duty to prowl through worlds, to keep them from bleeding through and destroying the fabric of existence
Ah man, no idea how i didn't see this the first time! I'm glad i could submit my entry in time heck, i'll maybe doodle up something to go with this tomorrow, i love the concept of figments so much oh gosh.

The new moon left the sky empty, only the spattering of stars dotting the sky. Leaves folded and intertwined with each other, obstructing the faint light and embracing the chilling darkness weaving between gnarled trunks. The dense forest expanded for miles in all directions with a sole exception. An unnaturally circular clearing, appearing so that the trees had been dislodged from their roots and pushed aside uniformly.
Softly cradled in blades of grass lay an intricate mask. Six dripping candles, conjoined in trios and molded in the image of a pair of angular antlers, bathed the mask in white illumination. The light flickered as the flames of the waxen antlers swayed.
One by one, tiny flares came to life with indigo radiance, floating ominously above the beaked disguise. Soon, the darkness was spotted with the dancing lights of wisps, each flashing in turn seemingly coordinated. A whisper accompanied each gleam. A series of arcing sparks, almost like live wires were tangled amongst the foliage, begin to randomly connect the tips of leaves and branches. The zaps and whispers combined to create a strangely droning song. An eerie tune impossible to imagine being synthesized by its constituent sounds. The wisps’ movements and the electric arcs synchronized with each other and the haunting melody. Fruit hanging from the trees joined the elaborate display with dim glows of a familiar artificial hue. The radiance intensified slowly, flickering brightly for just a moment when a spark bounced to its stem. As each fruit ripened to its peak luminosity, a pair of lights wakened in the distance between the trees. An audience to the radiant symphony. The clearing was illuminated by the unnatural lights, and dozens of pairs of haunting eyes observed the lively spectacle from the safety of the trees.
The performance endured for hours until the rays of day pierced the shroud of night. The sun crested the horizon and painted the heavens with pink and orange. The brilliant orchestra began to fade as the golden chariot further emerged. The wisps became lethargic and the electric jumps less frequent. The glowing fruit lanterns dimmed as if drained of fuel. With the night just a memory, the display waned and fizzled. All that remained was the mysterious veil and its six violet candles, laying in dormancy until the shadows animate them again.
