For as long as Vatti's been alive she always known Clyde to be the one to take care of her and always have all the answers but he wasn't always that way. When Valsa was little she had a slightly different experience of him. Now Clyde has black hair with a white stripe, it used to just be black... Clyde had a lot of baggage back then, he dabbled in dangerous magic, he hurt himself. Valsa was his driving force to get his life back in order. When he was sick, lost, scared and disoriented she would sit in his lap and let him hold her until it passed. Most of the color returned to Clyde's hair over time till it got to where it is now though it's unlikely that last strip of white will ever go away.
