Taken last night just north of [redacted]
We had a little bit of weather roll through yesterday and it cleared out right at sunset, making for fantastic conditions to photograph the night sky. This particular location has incredibly dark skies to the west as the closest source of significant light pollution out there is [redacted] at over 120mi and 2 mountain ranges away.
The yellow/orange clouds in this image aren't actually clouds at all, they're masses of Sodium and Oxygen atoms that have been excited by the sun's extreme ultraviolet light throughout the day and are now emitting chemiluminescence as they collide and decay in the Thermosphere.
Incredible stuff: http://www.atoptics.co.uk/highsky/airglow2.htm
This image is a single ~16min exposure at ISO 800, f/2.8
