The Comics Code was loosening up in the 70s, which was why Marvel was able to do the flood of monster/horror books (Tomb of Dracula, Man-Thing, Ghost Rider, et al) that came out then. That included stuff about the Devil and demons because The Exorcist had been such a big, recent hit in theaters. Pop culture-wise, the whole country was big on that for a while.
