Imps possess spoken languages and the ability to mimic sounds, but they also have a set of natural calls with a fixed meaning, like contact and warning calls. They are something members of different cultures and languages can use for very basic communication. Each species has distinct calls; imps of the umbra group have deep, crow-like calls, the rufus group's calls are clear sounds reminiscient of howling, masked imps use high-pitched chirps and the hooded imps were reported to make sounds resembling a mocking laugh. The porbably strangest calls are those of the tundra imps, being a series of whetting sounds and deep creaks that carry far and have a superficial resemblance to the calls of a capercaillie. But rather than using those sounds like other imp species do, tundra imps use them like a morse code for communication over longer distances in the thick conifer forests they live in.
Also, this is what a tundra imp's summer coat is patterned like.
