It's open to interpretation at the moment, but I figure that the costume needs a body to be able to stand up and move around on its own, so the one inside is stuck there either until she's rescued or for the rest of her life, watching the costume live its own life using her body as its body.
Yes, the costume needs to keep the person alive, so the costume would now have to "eat," which is really just forcing the person to eat. They'd have to do all the normal things to upkeep "their" body. The only difference is that the girl is just watching it all happen with no control over anything herself.
