in the twenties Mae West rode up and stopped at a gas station to fill up. the attendant thought he'd be clever, "kind of hot riding out this mornin', ain't it, Miss West?" to which she replied "yeah, if you had as many nuts between your legs as I do, you'd be hot too!" She was riding an Ariel Square Four notorious for having a lot of fasteners to hold it together. it had two crankshafts and four pistons and a rear mounted lever for the shift to higher gears. four low gears three higher gears. it would cruise at about 130 mph. it also had a clutch lever below the handle bars so you had to let go of the gas to shift.
