Another pic from this past Saturday's DC trip, this one from the Smithsonian of their Gastornis skeleton. These things were like real-life chocobos....just deadlier XD In that they ate the primitive ancestors of horses and whatnot X3

Well it being a bird I would assume that its beak is like that of other birds in that its an extension of the skull but is made of a modified calcium like fingernails.
It does actually preserve like bone...just like the horns on ancient deer or the tusks of a mammoth which are made of similar material XD
