The reason its made of wax is so it can shapeshift (it's a special kind of wax which allows this, as well as will regenerate itself awhile after melting).

I'm planning to make some story reason for why they stay as wax as well rather than work so much on upgrading the tech (mainly gonna be due to political reasons and people being afraid of robots, especially ones which can shape shift).
