Probably the beginning of WWI, when the BEF ( British Expeditionary Force ) engaged the German Army in Belgium.
The Battle of Mons (23 August 1914) was his first major action...

I don't know. I've read a number of accounts where they talk about the heavy losses, especially in officers and NCOs. The BEF's espirit de corps, in a certain sense, was gone forever by 1915. The conscripts (Kitchener's Army) formed an Army that was totally different from the "Mr. Kipling's Army" of 1914 and before.
At some points in the early fighting German troops caught in the open by BEF Regulars took such rapid and accurate fire that they thought they were under fire from machine guns.
