(Experimental)
In the days following 9/11, 2001, a certain Jerry Falwell appeared on an episode of The 700 Club and made the following statement:
"I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way, all of them who have tried to secularize America. I point the finger in their face and say 'you helped this happen.'"
I didn't watch the show then, I don't watch it now, but I do watch the news, and I was stunned by these words. I was stunned - not that paranoid xenophobia existed, but at the sheer level to which it did exist. I thought about what could possibly make him think this, and after a while, it started to make sense.
Yes, Jerry, it's because this is a free country where people are able to choose their religion, their beliefs, their preferences, even (with surgery) their gender, that this could happen. This never would have happened under a government that forced Christianity on pain of death, required all to think, dress, look, and act alike. What a wonderful and utopian world that would be, indeed!
Mr. Falwell apologized for his words on September 14, 2001. I don't know if anyone believed him.
