Riley is a human -- just as Naomi (Naoki) was, before she was possessed by a desperate fox spirit.

The fox spirit inhabited Naomi's body in order to make use of her eyes, because he was blind. She didn't know what was happening to her, wasn't sure why, but she trusted her gut instinct and let the kitsune spirit possess her as long as it needed to. When it left her body, traces of it remained and Naomi was transformed into a strange cross-breed of human and fox, sprouting ears and tails.

The ears did not replace her human ears, which remained, which is why she has two pairs. Her physical eyes became blind after the fox spirit left. Naomi was blind for almost a year until the fox spirit (now with his affairs in order) caught wind of the side-effects of his possession of her. He came back and gifted her with psychic sight in apology.

So, Naomi (who goes by the name Naoki Ninetails as a sort of nickname that stuck) has a normal human family, which includes Riley.

it's my fault for not getting that character sheet and info out there. i just originally didn't think anyone would care when i first started drawing her, and now the questions are starting to catch up to me! :D like "WHY DOES SHE HAVE TWO PAIRS OF EARS." i have to pour the backstory out everytime but once i do, i think it makes sense. -lol-

Actually, the 4 ears thing I figured out earlier... and a backstory is a good thing to have, especially with a character with a special trait like blindness or deafness.

oh, and the main reason i didn't point out the blindness normally is because she basically can "see" just fine. she just does it with her mind instead of her eyeballs. X3 i only mention it when people ask why her eyes look weird.
