The Lore of Prima Segment Eight: Magic
Welcome back to The Lore of Prima, where we delve into the wonderful mysteries and trivia in the universe of This Primal World. One such mystery is that of magic.
Magic, or the Art of the Elders as it has been officially named, has been around since the dawn of the Xiahwenite. They are infused with it and can harness it's powers. Any Xiahwenite can learn magic. Some more than others.
Indeed, there are many Xiahwenites who will only ever be able to use the most basic of magics, fire starting. Being able to create fire is considered essential to a Xiahwenite, however, so despite being a beginner spell, it has its usage. Need to make a campfire? Use this spell. Of course, Xiahwenites can start a fire through more traditional methods such as flint.
And then there are others who learn far more. Lightning, water, earth, darkness, wind, levitation and even teleportation. Lightning and water are considered to be advanced spells due to the emotions required to master them. Levitation and short range teleportation are considered to be among the hardest to learn, requiring decades of training to get down and decades more to master. A Xiahwenite that has learned these will typically be in their late fifties.
The Kadime are the most in tune with magic and therefore seem to have the easiest time learning them among other Xiahwenites. A Kadime mage is a powerful ally to have and nightmarish foe to cross. But even then, they need to have decades of training still.
The Arts correspond with an emotion of sorts. These emotions need to be very strong in order to bring them out. Here is a chart of some of the magics known and the corresponding emotions.
Pyromancy (control of fire such as fireballs): Happiness
Electromancy (control of lightning and electricity): Wrath
Hydromancy (being able to control water such as creating water out of thin air): Calm
Holy (control over things such as light, teleportation, levitation, life): Empathy
Dark (control of things such as necromancy, shadows, curses and death): Envy
Aeromancy (being able to control the wind and weather conditions): Carefree
Geomancy (control of earth and nature such as terraformation): Serious
Cryomancy (control of ice such as creating ice out of thin air): Sadness
And, yes, it is highly illegal for Xiawhenites to use the more advanced forms of these magics. For example, Xiahwenite who has mastered aeromancy can be imprisoned for changing the weather from something like a sunny day to a stormy one, and visa versa. Though such Xiahwenites are very rare, as to be able to do something as magnificent as that would take decades of training and require that person to also be naturally talented in that type of magic.
The only person that can easily use magic without much training is the Core Restorer, like Andesine in the comic book (who has finally begun to grasp the concept that she is capable of it). This is because they are blessed with divinity by Xiahwen herself and therefore have special access to these magics. We will be getting into the Core Restorers in the next Lore of Prima segment, however.
How do many feel about magic?
Well the Onweja definitely don't care much for it. They prefer the up close and personal method of dealing with foes, with an axe in one hand and a shield in the other. Those that do dabble in it are considered Shamans. They mostly use basic ice and earth elemental magic. These Shamans, however, also know how to use weapons. They will typically use a long, club like weapon that is simply called the Shaman's Staff. This staff is usually adorned with skulls and bones on the top of it.
Kadime are the exact opposite. They LOVE magic. Magic has allowed their small frames to overcome even the mightiest foes and make the desert they live in hospitable. Every single Kadime must learn the basics of the main elemental spells: fire, air, water, and earth. Their martial arts require a large amount of thought and willpower. While some will use weapons such as schimitars, most see little need for them as their hands have become just as lethal.
Bewekaja and Kawekvorja have no issue with magic and can even see the advantages of having it. To be a warrior in their culture, you need to at least know how to throw a basic fireball. But they do also realize that a weapon can be just as effective and so they have made their martial arts a mix of magic utilization and weapon training.
Bimamilja are pretty neutral about it, possibly more on the side of the Onweja in terms of stance on the subject. They don't mind learning it but they do consider those that use it to be weak. However, having knowledge of basic water spells makes for a pretty entertaining show and so they use it for more recreational use than practical things.
And finally the Alivorja. These people actually like magic, specifically geomancy and pyromancy. Since they like to live in caves, they use geomancy to carve them into large communities and use pyromancy to see what they are doing and for their massive forges to make weapons.
That concludes this segment. Join in next time as we discuss the CORE RESTORERS!!!
