When Br'er Fox arrived in Ellaville, he was hungry from his long journey. Really in the mood for an RC cola and a moon pie. Or a NEHI grape soda and pork rinds.
He hoped to stop in the Suwannee River store but it appeared to be closed.
Built in 1925 or 1926, the store has been abandoned for decades and is one of the few remaining structures in Ellaville. Next to it is a house built in the 50's , I think and is the only remaining occupied residence in what was once Ellaville.
The residents came out side as they were quite intrigued by a giant otter and fox posing for photos on the abandoned bridge next to their house.
I explained what we were doing and also that I loved exploring abandoned places. The daughter was hesitant to tell us that this store had a disturbing history to it. According to her it was where serial killer Ted Bundy dumped his last 2 victims. She asked us if we would like to see the basement that Ted Bundy used as a hide out. Without hesitation I said YES !
With Mom's permission she lead us (me, Durango Dingo and Blazer Raccoon) into the basement. She made it sound like this was Ted Bundy's lair of terror where he had women chained to the wall and tortured and murdered them. It was truly one of the spookiest places I have ever been in and it was strangely intriguing to be in this basement, a "jackpot" of abandoned places.
After I got home I did some research only to find that the story was somewhat exaggerated. I looked on the internet and nowhere do I find anything about Ted hiding in an abandoned general store basement in Ellaville. But one thing is true.
Ted Bundy killed 3 women in Florida. 2 in Tallahassee , however his final victim was 12 year old Kimberly Leach. Kidnapped from nearby Lake City, her skeletal remains we found just a mile or 2 from this abandoned store.
So it is quite possible that Ted Bundy used this place as a hideout before / during / after the murder of Kimberly Leach. It is quite possible he held her in this basement before he raped and killed her and left her body in an abandoned shed in the Suwannee River state park, less than a mile away.
