My pencil sketches are usually done with a blue Col-Erase pencil on either smooth animation paper or Bristol board.
I find Col-Erase is just waxy enough that it doesn't smear and smudge quite as easily as regular graphite pencils (tho it will smudge a bit), but it's also somewhat eraseable unlike most colored pencils.
