There was a real heart felt debate over the straight bladed sabre versus the curved sabre in Britain around the turn of the l9th century. In the end they went with the straight blade as did the French and later the Americans under General Patton who was a Master of the Sword.

That seems pretty consistent with my resources too, curved sabres were still issued by british army in 1885 but from pattern 1908 onward they switched to swords. Actually I based this one on 1821 pattern light cavalry sword used by light brigade as they rode "on into the valley of death" during the battle of balaklava in 1854.
