I shoot with the D50 and a 28-200mm Nikkor lens whenever I'm at the zoo, and you're right - blur is a big problem in anything but ideal light. Hence why I too have been looking at a VR lens, namely the 70-300mm AF-S VR that will be released in October.
30/400 seems about normal, too. Can you imagine if we were still using film?
