Something a little dark and dreary. Rita doing a bit of self-reflecting, in every sense of the word. Usually she's fairly positive, though brash, but there are moments she reflects on herself, being a robot in a world dominated by human beings who believe themselves to be "better" then her.
For the most part it doesn't get to her. She just shrugs it off as people being jerks. It happens, they exist. Rita has had her own moments of being a bit of an ass herself.
Still, every once in a while, she comes across that one person who belittles her. He won't listen to fact, he won't listen to reason, he might not even do or offer anything special, especially compared to Rita. He insists he's better because he has "true" feelings, and wasn't programmed to have "psudo-feelings," or what have you.
It's rare when Rita tries to reason with such people (even though it's futile, but what the hell), she usually explains that humans are machines too, only they're "chemical machines."
Rita's reasoning is that humans and robots aren't very different in principles, they just have unique approaches and creations. But, unfortunately, though rather expected, the man disliked this idea.
In fact, he hated the idea so much, he actually got violent with Rita. Rita was caught completely off guard as the man took out a pocket knife, and started to slash at her face.
He was arrested, but who knows if he'll go to jail. Probably not. At worst he'll just get fined for damaging some "property." It's not like he actually harmed another human being, let alone an actual living being. Robots can simply be repaired, expensive as it maybe, so it's not a big deal if they're damaged.
Apparently the man mistook Rita's words as an insult. Rita meant to imply that neither of the two are better or worse necessarily. But by trying to place both her and the man on equal settings, the man took it to mean he's just as degrading as a robot, perhaps even worse.
Typical, Rita tried to find common ground, but by reaching a hand out to connect, the man took it as sign of aggression, and overreacted.
And of course, the jerk himself is suing. Not Rita herself, but her employer, accusing the employer's "equipment" of assaulting him. By "assaulting him," he means Rita trying to fight him off for f**king slashing her face up.
Some robots have somatosensation receptors installed, being able to emulate the sense of touch, including pain. Mostly it's a out of a bold step to make a point. But to the courts it doesn't matter - it's an "artificial pain," so it don't count. Not to mention that it's the robot's fault for "wanting" to receive pain anyway, which some humans are more then happy to oblige...
Rita didn't gain somatosensation receptors to prove anything, she has them because she just wants to have the sensation of touch. Because she likes to give, and receive, hugs to and from people she loves. Because it helps her emphasise with her human friends more. Because she wants to explore the gift of pleasure...
But again, because she "choose" to feel pain, it's her own fault for receiving it.
Her feelings maybe pre-programmed, but what are feelings in humans? Animals evolved feelings to become social creatures, are artificial beings not allowed such a privilege too?
"Robots can change their feelings," humans say. No, that would defeat the purpose. Still, so what? humans can be just as unpredictable. Don't certain people tell anyone who's depressed to "get over it" anyway?
Rita looks at her damaged face. Her face can be repaired, but she'll carry a cold memory with her. One that she won't merely delete, some people have advised her. Again, it's not the first time she's encountered such people, but it's the first time they've reacted violently.
She's stuck in a political rock-and-a-hard-place. If she tries to defend herself against such an attack again with force, certain humans will point and say "see, see?! they ARE deranged and dangerous!!" But she's not going to stand idly by and let another jerkass attack her again.
She's not sure what to do in this situation, except cry...
I was kind of experimenting with ways to make my lighting setup better, I was getting sick of how, well, crappy my renders tend to be. As I was experimenting, I had a strange idea of having Rita in front of a mirror. As I continued to work, I gradually started to like the idea of the scene being rather depressing... dark... a sad and vulnerable side of Rita that's rarely shown. I kinda like showing characters in such a way. Especially characters that are kinda...for lack of a better word, we'll say "fan service." It portrays characters in a kind of juxtaposition that I like. An example with this art piece is how Rita has a rather curvy and sexy body, yet this is a rather somber moment of her.
That's not to say I get a "sick kick" from my characters being sad and depressed, but happiness can't always be.

Oh I have no doubt that when we get to a point where we get sophisticated A.I., there will be people who would be like this, if not worse. And believe me, I've read and "researched" a lot about these kinds of people. At risk of sounding political, it's really depressing just how much hatred people can have for the "other." And it's disturbing what lengths they will go to make sure the "other" are made to be "lesser" in society - where "they belong." Even worse are the people who are subtle and/or "higher up," who uses law and government to their sick advantage.
But I ramble.
On a more lighter note, just to kinda-sorta "balance" out the depression of this piece, I do plan to portray Rita in a more sensual manner. Though it may take a while because Turkey~Day.
