No new progress on the final part of the 'End of an Era' series, so for this weekend, here's the start of the new 'era' for Carl.
This piece and a few others have actually been done for a while, but I wanted to give the 'End of an Era' series a chance to be finished, so I could neatly close that out (and get everything hosted that needed to be hosted).
My motivation for this change was two-fold really....
- Firstly, Carl has been around a pretty long while as a character. I first came up with the concept of him back around 2005/2006, with Carl being an up and coming tennis player in his late teens (a similar age to me at the time), an unknown to most, trying to establish himself, having made the move into the pro-level. Since that time, he hasn't really aged or developed, and I wanted to put that right.
- I've always been an admirer of unique characters, who stand out. I think I managed it reasonably well with Narch, but Carl was more.... standard (hence the almost ever-present cross chain as a small way of differentiating him). I see this as an opportunity to evolve him as a character, with a look that showcases a bit more of his personality, and actually to give him a look that is close to the tennis player back then that he was modelled on (I picked an up and coming player, whose style was close to the style and temperament I play with, albeit much better than me!). I'm sure if Carl's career went as well as that said player, he'd be pretty happy! Big kudos to anyone that can guess who that might be (I don't think I've ever told anyone that one)!
Since all I had was a concept (or two) in my head, I needed an artist I trusted to turn those ideas into something visual. It was an easy choice, really, and I'm glad they accepted the challenge. That artist, of course, is
Lightdevil, who I am a huge fan of.
Both concepts looked amazing, so you'll see the other look in the future (I'll assume that look was him in his mid-20s). I settled on this one though and was so, so pleased with how it came out.
Hope you all like his new look! Thumbs up?

Caaaaaaarrrrl! What did you do?!
No, looking good, but does this mean the crucifix is now gone?
In any case, It's great to meet the new you and I look forward to us hopefully having more fun together in the future. I was very interested to read the back-story behind Carl. Without adding wings and horns and neon shit, it's hard to make your character stand out, especially when the character is breed or species-specific. You made it work with the previous Carl and this one- he's always been a dobie I recognise and love, no matter who draws him.
lots of Woofs from your dobie pal,

Besides overthrowing governments, sinking ships and building meat dragons? Not much.
The cross chain isn't going anywhere, as it's a keepsake he holds dear (and a link of sorts between character and owner, even if my cross chain needs replacing, having broken years ago!). As for the other changes, I wanted to go with things that were possible, rather than doing anything really drastic (I couldn't see a Doberman just growing wings in their mid-20s!). Pretty happy it achieved my aims.
His mind-set early in his career was reflected in his look; clean-cut, disciplined, keen for his tennis to do all the talking. As he aged and progressed, it granted that bit more freedom to experiment with his own look, to express himself in ways other than just on the court (as a fair few players do over the years). His particularly 'wild' spell was around his mid-20s, which I'll host some time in the future, with him settling on something a bit more down to earth here; a look that'll last him through the peak and second half of his 'career'.
Naturally, I love the comments and kind words. Definitely wouldn't mind sorting a catch-up or two between the Dobies in the future!
