It does get a lot like that, severely draining ;w;
My first shiny of SuMo was a random Gastly.. and Pichu I actually buckled down for.
I did mine without an Adrenaline orb because I like to have my full team as early as possible and haven't even left the first island.
It took 5 chains because the first two times I accidentally killed both SOS pokemon.. and the third and fourth chain was broken due to a Happiny and a hidden ability Pichu.
But on my fifth chain, about SOS pokemon number.. 30ish, was the shiny Pichu.

NO IT'S FINE x33
The hidden ability will only break your chain if you catch it.. which I did @w@
And I know what you mean, I asked a pokemon X and Y group if there's a reliable guide, but they went, "LEL CHECK YOUTUBE" yeah okay let me wade through all the spoiler ridden content and clickbait to find someone who knows how to tell you something without being incredibly redundant >:C
Tips are:
1. Adrenaline Orb is your best friend. Using it at the start of battle will increase the odds of the wild Pokemon calling for help. BUT NOT NECESSARY
2. The lower the wild Pokemon's health, the higher chance they will call for help.
3. Having a Pokemon with Hold Back or False Swipe is great for lowering the Pokemon's health to 1HP for the maximum chance for an S.O.S
4. Don't use Hold Back or False Swipe on a Wild Pokemon with a recoil move.
5. It is highly recommended to faint the original Pokemon after about 30 turns so as to keep it from using Struggle and fainting itself. The chain will not be broken if the original Pokemon faints. The chain is only broken when the battle ends.
6. Leppa Berries, Elixirs, and Ethers alongside high PP moves are recommended as you will be fainting a LOT of Pokemon to run your chain.
7. Switching out your Pokemon does not break the chain nor disable the Adrenaline Orb's affect. If you're running low on PP, feel free to switch out. I PERSONALLY RECOMMEND A POKEMON THAT WILL SCARE THE SOS'ING POKEMON (super effective type matchup against your target pokemon (wild grass type, use a fire type that's larger ((but not with flame body)) )
