Smaug in fact was based on Richard Wagner´s Fafnir the dragon from the Niebelungen story and the connected opera.
in the first german translation of Tolkien´s Hobbit Smaug even used a quote from the Wagner Fafnir
"Ich lieg und besitz! Lass mich schlafen!"
"I lay here and posess. Let me sleep!"

Smaug does look adorable at this stage, though already on his way to gathering his horde, and it obviously grew over time though I expect he still had that first gold coin embedded somewhere in his 'waistcoat'.
Very nicely drawn as usual and once again with one of your pieces your mother did a rather wonderful job with the colouring, for a very nice collaboration.

Years later, when the hobbits ener Smaug's cave, it's totally empty. Smaug has a rectangular thing around his neck. When confronted, the dragon shows the hobbits...a Visa credit card!
