Taking flight is one of the two QF-4Es that participated at Aviation Nation 2016. In all honesty, I had no clue this jet was slated to fly. I also had no clue that the aircraft will be de-militarized by the end of 2016.
With over 5,000 built, the F-4 Phantom is the most produced jet fighter in the world. Today, that incredible number has shrunk down to just 21 QF-4s. The QF-4 is a specially-modified, remote-controlled variant used for weapon and system evaluation. The aircraft pictured is one of the few repainted for the purpose of being displayed.
If any of the remaining 21 Phantoms survive beyond the end of the year, they will be mothballed and sent to a bombing range.
Not seeing this legend in action ever again will undoubtedly seem strange and unusual. It will be missed.

I do know that some F-4s are privately owned by civilians. It's kinda sad more recent jets like this aren't demilitarized and sold to enthusiasts to preserve them. I'm sure there are potential buyers out there, it's not like the F-4s and their variants are anything totally secret anymore.
