Sketch commission for
doppler ... muscles bulging and straining and bursting most of his clothes as he hefts the whole globe over his head, pulling a total Atlas maneuver. It's what he does.
I tried to sketch this in the grand tradition of a Boris Vallejo or Frank Frazetta type fantasy painting ... just, you know, with more raccoon.

OKay, okay, lame comment. Seriously, there's so much -right- with this picture! Pose, anaomy. the... bigness... Mm. Hey, the fact that he's a raccoon is just extra bonus points! ha! And that globe's freakin' f-tastastic. Don't tell me you just used a reference and copied those shorelines. The frakin' -detail-...
You know, that's an interesting point, as I had the stereotypical image of Atlas holding up the earth in my head, even as I knew that mythologically Atlas was supposed to be holding up the heavens.
I did a little Google research ... turns out that the Atlas-holding-the-globe image was first popularized by the cartographer Gerardus Mercator in the 1500s, and the Atlas in his image wasn't the Titan Atlas, but instead the mythical "King Atlas of Mauretania," who supposedly created the first globe. It's from this image that the word "atlas" came to refer to a collection of maps.
The things you learn!

i know I'm probably a member of the legions of people who have said this but WOW that globe is impressive. i really love the detail work and the careful shading to convey night and day. the coast lines are perfect and really well rendered. I'm amazed by it i really am! wow!
I support more raccoon in art! raccoons deserve to be in more awesome muscled art woo!
the details on doppler are really nice. i love how you convey the action of his shirt ripping off of his body as he hefts the earth skyward. It is really cute and it helps draw attention to that tensed and firm torso of his. Love his face too it has a nice level of strain, amusement, and confidence that really shows how Atlas like he is. I really love his legs too the muscle articulation is really nice for the pose he is in and it shows the strain and power he's bringing to lifting the globe like that.
Also the tail is really awesome all fluffy and huge and curled in back around him. Very nice touch very attention getting very neat. Overall this picture has a lot of excellent detail work, some design elements that really draw me in, and its just fun. I like the use of the Atlas concept, turning a punishment into an enjoyable exercise for Doppler, and its amusing and cute. the detail work though blows me away. thank you for sharing it!

I'm sure the people of Northeastern Brazil didn't see his hand coming until it was too late! He's gonna have some serious splinters in his palm with the Amazonian trees he crushed, and, of course, all the skyscrapers in Sao Paulo that are jammed in the base of his thumb and the resorts of Belem stuck in his pinky. That's gotta be very uncomfortable for him!
