I've actually hit maximum speed in a game session with -another party member riding on my back- (
sroecastle, sorry not sorry), this was in a short scene, after speaking with elves, I dove down from a flying ship to meet up with the rest of the party before we left for elsewhere. We all laughed at the gnoll's fuzzed up hair at the time but a more malicious DM would probably have asked for a fortitude save vs wind shear or something.
I'm no aeronautic engineer, I know, and I don't exactly have a wind tunnel to see where the transonic vapor cones will happen on a dragon, but I'd like some input on that.
I just feel productive this last month. Rest assured, commissions are ongoing, I just drew this between asking on corrections/redraws. I had fun listening to Ace Combat soundtracks for this.

arcalane, I like Liberation of Gracemeria)

There's an old joke about how passing things from one person to another can happen as a minor or readied action, so you'd line up a whole bunch of hirelings and have them ready actions to pass a brick or other small object along the chain. Get enough people in a line and you could make that small object surpass the speed of sound.
Starting from young adulthood onwards, dragons get escalating damage resistance, which is never really explained as anything except 'because dragons'. They're safe.
But while the dragon itself is safe from such speeds, I'd agree that anyone riding them at that velocity will need to be in special enchanted harnesses that pretty much reflect modern cockpits and passenger compartments with normalized air pressure. Especially since while dragons can't actually hit supersonic themselves (the above scenario is rule of cool), the air around them will (shock collars/vapor cones happen in transonic flight).
Liatai once DMed a game (which I sat in to watch sometimes) and decided to do the harness thing the one time so the party didn't end up being TPK'd by physics.
Usually people just suspend disbelief and ride dragons regardless, because it's cool.

For the stick figure, yeah, I'd agree. Supersonic wind without protection would be fatal. As for the dragon, well...I could go total nerd and explain it as to how a dragon's body could perhaps withstand wind speeds in access of 400 to 500 MPH naturally, but...I like Doctor's response better: 'Because dragons'.
