Yes, the native intelligent life form of Oculus is silicate based. Sort of an information storing crystal race. They live forever but if you take one from the planet they die. Because they can never leave their planet they have built a kind of colossal observatory to satisfy their insatiable curiosity about the universe. It's a silicate shell that encompasses most of the planet and can rotate at will, turning the planet into a giant eyeball that can focus on any point of the visible universe. In the story I'm writing, the Argons visit Oculus to aquire navigational data.
