Firstly, the term "ricer" doesn't just apply to Asian cars. Domestic cars frequently get treated like this, too. (common examples are the Dodge/Plymouth Neon, Ford Focus, Chevrolet Cavalier)
Even the Europeans do it, although over there they call them "boy racers"

Second, there's a fine line between a ricer and a tuner. Tuners have the performance upgrades to back up their appearance, while ricers are essentially stock underneath. So yeah, I get the feeling that if you're gonna go messing with your car's body, they'll at least want you to do the job right.
