Yeah I agree but there is also the cluster style where they cluster the fur making them flow almost at seemingly random intervals instead of giving them a singular wave. Just like the waves on the sea, slightly random directions instead of an indoor artificial sea where the waves seem almost identical to one another making them feel... A little bit... I don't know how to express it into words though, but the closest I could think of is odd.
Ì'm not entirely sure what kind of look you're aiming for, if you could link an example that'd help. As said though I use the relatively clear edges to the fur by choice to define the form, I find it aesthetically pleasing even if it isn't entirely realistic. This could be a matter of taste.
When talking about art... I have to say it's all just a matter of taste -_- XD
But to give examples...
's work is an example.
This for better point

The fur clusters in different waves and rarely follow a single line or wave. Like waxy hair... And for me, my hair when I wake up :/
Or my cat's rarely brushed fur... And to me when fur follow a single wave, it may indicate very defined muscle underneath that make that single line... Which my cat has. I don't mind him coz I think he's buffing up for the mating season in January :3
