A second adventurer came my way later. I had finally dried the paper out, and was beginning to copy the faded lines onto a new sheet, when he offered to help, promising not to get the papers wet.

I never saw that adventurer again.

Instead a few hours later, I went into the woods myself, and found a good section of the underbrush singed, and a few goblins burnt to crisp nearby. I also found near a pile of cinders, roughly-human shoeprints tracks that abruptly are replaced by small reptilian tracks leading off toward the mountains.

I’m no tracker, but I know what burnt sea-vellum smells like. Next time i’ll invest in fire-proof pages. As for the adventurer, it’s a safe bet he’s responsible for the fires spreading in the mountain path, and that he’s probably a kobold.
