Name: Kahikatea (aka Cake)
Species: Monstrel (Monitor Lizard X Kestrel hybrid)
Subspecies: Peach Throat Monitor

Diet: Carnivore/Insectivore Large insects, Rodents, Small deer, Small pig and boar, bird, fish, and scavenged organs from larger prey (they love heart meat the most).

Personality/Demeanor: Cautious, Vigilant, Somewhat flighty, Caring, Loyal.


Bio: Monstrel prefer the safety of the trees and wide, shallow canals over land walking and open areas. They enjoy sunbathing high in the canopy and on cool stone on riverbed. This species spends some time in caring for it's feathers and scales to keep itself in top shape and free of parasites which are common in it's natural habitat.

They enjoy silently stalking their prey, and are opportunistic hunters. Their small stomachs and high metabolisms burn off energy quickly forcing them to hunt frequently.

Some more civilized/tame monstrel use bow and knives as their primary means of offense instead of their claws and teeth.

Few are educated (due to their flighty nature they stay away from most of civilizations), though their intelligence level is high and they learn skilled trade quickly. Those who are educated enjoy traveling, showing off their skills and perfecting their trades.

Those trained in the art of medicine share a great level of caring and loyalty. Medicine and herbs usage are one trade they highly excell at when they choose to educate themselves.

Monstrel use their powerful back legs and tail to balance themselves against trees and on limbs to steady their aim and remain silent.

Their head crest rises and falls with their mood, and if threatened will flare out and pulse, giving it a large, threatening appearance. The bright patterns make focusing on them very distracting especially when they take an agressive/defensive stance.

The feathers atop their shoulders allow for enhanced balance and ease of steering while both in the air and in the water (much like a dorsal fin).

They bare two long retractable fangs that are only used in emergency. The bite from these teeth can inject as much venom to kill any natural creature, and stun many species larger than herself so to get away.
They are tough and pliable and are difficult to break.
Monstrel saliva can be coated with venom that drips down into the mouth from the retracted fangs so to spit at their enemies and cause temporary/permanent blindness. They never use their venom on prey.

Their short arm feathers (*edited design*) allow them to glide quietly and swiftly through trees, and their long hooked fingers allow them to easily hang onto tree bark.

Their lean, light figure makes swift swimming and gliding an easy task. It also makes them very vulnerable to large predators since their light structure can be easily broken and damaged.
