Now I must find a rom of that game and play the heck out of it, and perhaps beat it without my brother's help now that I'm so much of an uber gamer compared to how I was before :D

I strongly suspect that the game was developed by an American or European team, rather than Sunsoft's own staff of Japanese developers. That was almost always the kiss of death for video games before the shift to 3D changed the rules.
