[Story/Art] The Quarterstone nightmare
The Quarterstone nightmare:A growing maze of despair causes town to be abandoned
On may 20, 1996, in the town of Quarterstone, Vermont, a large, stone maze was discovered 50 feet below the surface of the town’s public high school. This discovery led to a scandal involving the town mayor, 46 year old rabbit Robert Holden, (who is avoiding arrest to this day, and whose whereabouts are unknown) sabotaging the high school in order to close it down to search for a rumored treasure in the maze. Though it almost succeeded, the scandal was uncovered by 20 year old siamese cat Beatrice Arterberry, a journalist who had graduated from the high school two years prior.
However, the school soon saw itself being shut down for another reason, as various faculty and students began complaining about “Uncomfortably strong feelings of dread and curiosity” towards the maze. These feelings eventually reached a peak, and some 15 to 18 students and faculty went missing, with most witnesses saying that they went into the maze “for a minute, just to see what’s in there…” and never came out. This caused the school to shut down, and a search party to be dispatched into the maze to find them.
Three weeks later, a total of two search parties, 26 people in total, have gone missing in the maze, and reports of the maze being larger than previously thought, the size of it now estimated to span the entire town, caused the town to be evacuated until the issues could be solved. These events greatly affected the townsfolk, causing some to become paranoid or hysterical, and to those of whom were related to the missing individuals, full on loss of sanity, as most of them claim to be able to hear the missing crying out from the maze.
A remote controlled robot was sent in the maze a few days after the evacuation which retrieved a decaying journal of one of the members of the search party. This journal contained a startling account of the excursion, detailing the impossible layout of the maze, as well as describing some bizarre horrors that seem to dwell inside ( This painting being a interpretation of one of the creature descriptions that was done by a swiss artist by the name of klemi ). Most people became split over this discovery, with some claiming the search party member simply lost his/her mind from thirst and starvation, and others accepting the journal as proof that supernatural entities lie within.
Beatrice, who now lives in the nearby town of Archer’s rock, has dedicated her life to uncovering the secrets of the Quarterstone maze, even with the possibility of her joining the missing.
