Story:
“How’s your leg feeling, Quill?” Sol asked, coming into the house with what looked to be fabric under his arm.
Quill hopped off the bed he had been resting on and made his way over to his lover and gave him a kiss. “It’s doing a lot better today! I don’t feel any soreness, and I think my fur has grown back enough for me to not hate it anymore. Heehee~”
It had been a few months now since the incident with the cannibal who broke Quill’s leg. The healing process was painful and frustrating with needing surgery, changing casts a lot and shaving his fur several times, but now it was at the end of it. For Quill, the most frustrating was staying in the house all day every day while Sol had to help out around the village and go to his day job in the nearby town. But now Quill was cast-free with barely any pain.
“Great! I want to take you out on a date tonight to celebrate,” Sol said, giving Quill a quick kiss back.
“Ooh, a date? Isn’t that when you go out to eat at a place that brings food to you? I know I’ve heard about it before…”
“Pretty much, yeah. This place I visit a bunch has some sweet treats I’m sure you’ll like, and it would be fun to be out in public with you,” he said. Sol gave a warm smile, seeing Quill’s interested expression.
“Let’s go, then!” Quill said with a little happy jump.
“Haha, hang on now, I have something for you, first.” Sol stepped away from Quill and unfolded the piece of fabric from under his arm. It was long and blue with what looked to be lightning bolts darting around the piece of clothing.
Quill tilted his head, looking at it. “What is it?” he asked, reaching out to touch it.
“It’s a shawl. This is to wear in public. I bought it a while ago but wanted to wait until you felt better, and now that you are we can see how it fits.”
“Is it like how humans wear clothes?” Quill asked, getting help from Sol to put it on.
“Yes, in general it’s to help keep them warm, but in their culture it’s also rude to see their private parts. That should only be for your partner to see.”
“I like seeing yours~” Quill said with a little smirk.
“Heh, okay you little tease, tell me how this fits.” Sol took a step back, letting Quill fully feel the fabric over him. Quill twisted a few times, seeing the ends of the shawl move around. It had some weight to it, but it felt good.
“I love it!” Quill lifted up the end part, revealing himself. “But how does this keep me covered? It moves around.” He wiggled it about.
“You have to also put these on,” Sol said, holding up what looked like giant fabric bracelets. He moved down and put one of each around Quill’s thighs, Velcro-ing them together. Then he took the little hook that was aimed to the inner thighs, and connected them to the underside of the shawl. “This will keep it in place.”
“Oooh . . . it feels funny.”
“You’ll get used to it~”
Quill finished putting the rest of the shawl on, being two arm bands that he agreed to wearing, and Sol put on his own shawl. Quill marveled at the differences between their shawls, as Sol’s was very geometric with the designs, and a lot more warm colors. It fit Sol very well!
Quill was very eager to get to wherever Sol wanted to take him, but Sol wanted to go the slow route: walking. So they did so, in which Quill also became fine with it, as he was spending time with Sol anyways.
They walked through the thick forest, following a cleared out path that gave them just enough room to walk side-by-side. While walking, Sol explained more with what he did for work, and how he came to this little café a few times a week and how it had a beautiful view. Quill listened, his excitement growing more. It sounded amazing! But as they kept walking, a thought started to come to his mind . . .
The walking took a good half hour or so, but they made it to the edge of the town.
Sol kept going, but noticed Quill had stopped.
“Is something wrong?” Sol asked, coming back to him.
“It’s just . . . I haven’t been in a town like this for years. People always hated the sight of me, and scared me away. You’re sure they aren’t mean . . .?”
Sol leaned down and kissed his forehead for reassurance. “Our kind may not be a huge presence here, but the people have been very kind. I’ve never had trouble, and I work here! I promise it will be perfectly safe.”
Quill gave a nod, and then Sol took his hand and walked again. Quill wanted to trust his mate.
There were people pretty much everywhere as soon as they entered the town. Trees were also everywhere in this town as well, covering each building with their canopy. The buildings were made out of brick and mud, with various plants popping out the cracks. It almost felt like the village, but just way more packed. Quill quietly looked around, very nervous. He was excited in the beginning hearing about this place, but seeing all the humans made him uneasy. But Sol said the people were nice here, right?
A few people waved towards Sol, clearly knowing who he was. He gently waved back and kept moving forward. This was a good sign.
Soon they came upon a building nestled between two other buildings. It read “Vine Café”, which it fit its name pretty well as many vines covered the walls, almost engulfing it. There were a few people sitting and talking at the outside tables, very caught up in their conversations. One person was alone.
Sol guided Quill over to a table that had stumps as chairs, so their wings could fit. This area was specifically made for Sol since he had been such a frequent customer.
Quill sat down, and continued to look around, mainly eyeing each person around them. Sol sat directly across from Quill, but the table was small enough that it still felt personal.
“See? There’s no worries here.” Sol smiled at Quill and waved for a waiter.
Quill gripped his shawl, his heart pounding. This still was very nervewracking!
A waiter walker over with wide strides and stopped a few feet away from their table. He was a tall gentleman with short, reddish hair and he wore a nervous, crooked smile on his face.
“Ah, um, welcome to The Vine Café! I will be your waiter for today, w—“
“Oh, are you new here? I don’t think I’ve met you before,” Sol interrupted, smiling at the man. Quill was slightly hunched over with concern on his face, but watched patiently.
“Y-yes I am, sir. First day on the j-job . . .”
“My boyfriend here is new here as well, so it’s nice for you both doing something new! We’d like to look at the dessert menu, please.”
The waiter was a little baffled. He wasn’t expecting such an odd response.
“Y-yes, sir. Oh, oh and my name is Tom, and I’ll be your waiter . . . oh I already said that . . .” The man fumbled with the menu that was at his back, which fell to the ground. Quill started to give a quiet giggle, easing up a little bit. He couldn’t tell if this man was nervous because of his new job, or if it was because he had to serve two Volatikai. He tried to not think too much on it, because at least things were going okay.
Tom stood back up and turned the menu towards them, opening it up. It was shaking in his hands, and he kept messing up with pointing things out. As he listed off various things, Quill’s eyes lit up hearing about something familiar.
“Ooh I’ll have that!” he suddenly said, then quieted down again to a whisper. “Sorry . . . I’d like the banana thing.”
“The banana cream cake? C-certainly. And for you . . .?”
“I’ll have my usual, the extra black coffee, thank you.”
Tom scribbled down their wants into a small notebook, dropped that on the table, picked it up, apologized and left. Sol could see as Tom made it to the door that he gave a big sigh of relief.
“I felt he did a pretty good job for his first time. Don’t you think, Quill?”
“I just hope he’s not scared of us . . . I’d feel bad if he did.”
“Even if he was, he stood against his fears and got through it. You’re doing the same too, aren’t you?”
Quill looked at Sol with somewhat of a surprised look. He then gave a weak smile. “I guess so.”
Sol wanted to get Quill happier again, so he knew just what to say: “You should tell me how you’re liking those books I got you.”
Quill perked up again. “Sure . . .!”
The books were various stories that Sol brought back from work while Quill was still recovering from his broken leg. It gave him something to do, and most of the books Quill really liked. Especially the ones about gay relationships. Talking about this brought his mood back up, and he seemed more like himself. Sol kept a warm smile on his face while listening to his lover talk.
All the talking made the time go by quickly, and before they knew it both the drink and slice of cake were out. A different waiter—the cafe owner-- brought out the food this time, one whom knew Sol. This new guy was very nice and greeted Quill personally, mentioning how he was very glad to meet him finally, and how Sol talked about him a bunch. That put a blush on Quill’s face and made him feel really special. The man thanked them for coming to the café, and then left to get back to work.
“I really like him,” Quill said.
“Him and I are good friends, so I agree~” Sol said, being a little proud. “You should try your treat now, too.”
“Yes, yes!” Quill bounced a little bit, being brought back to reality. The piece was small, but it was also artistically done with a few banana slices on the top with various sauces drizzled over. He picked up the fork provided and put it into the cake, feeling how soft it was, then brought it to his mouth. “I haven’t used silverware in years . . . hmm . . . MMMM!” He grabbed his own face, tasting the delicious cake. It was so very sweet.
“It’s so goooood!” Quill said with a mouthful.
“Haha don’t lose any of it out of your mouth now!” Sol took a sip of his coffee.
“Want some?” Quill asked, yet again with a mouthful.
“Remember that I can’t have sweets, sweety.”
“Ooh, yeah . . . “ Quill put the rest into his mouth and hummed to the sweetness. Once finished he put down his fork on top of the wooden plate (in fact everything was wooden, but with a finish where the food went). “I’d love to come back here again. OH, can I try your drink?”
Sol was sipping at that moment, but he brought it back down and handed it over to him. “Just be careful, it’s hot.”
Quill brought up the cup to his lips and took the tiniest sip. A grossed out look went over his face and he pushed it away from himself. “BLEH, that’s gross!” Sol laughed in response and took the cup back. “Our taste buds are just very different. You should get some water though.” He flagged for a waiter again.
A few tables away, behind a bush that separated them, sat the man that was sitting by himself. He wore mostly black, with no color anywhere, and had short black hair and had a crucifix on, indicating he was someone who worked for the church. He had been eyeing the two Volatikai the whole time.
He had a sandwich he slowly ate, and asked for another at the moment Quill had finished his cake. The look on his face was that of hatred, or even disgust. What were two beasts doing here? Especially acting like humans? But, he shouldn’t leave until he made sure these two left as well. He had to make sure they didn’t cause any distress, but it was clear they had done so to that first waiter already. That poor man was scared out of his mind! But when should he intervene? Did these two plan to do something when he wasn’t paying attention?
He chewed his food very slowly while he watched.
Quill got his water from the first waiter, Tom, and he drank that down in large gulps. That hit the spot.
At this point the sun had set, but there was still a bunch of people walking around as well as joining the café. Fireflies also came out, blinking about trying to find mates.
Sol watched Quill continue to jabber on about random things. He (Sol) had his head in one hand, which was rested on the table by the elbow. He loved seeing Quill like this. It made his heart full of warmth and happiness, which he didn’t feel with anyone else. He was so happy to have Quill in his life.
“I love you, Quill,” Sol said suddenly, cutting him off from his jibber jabber. Quill developed a heavy blush again, not expecting that.
“I love you, too,” Quill said, slightly embarrassed but felt good. Sol got up and moved his stump next to Quill’s. He sat back down, gently put a hand on Quill’s arm, then leaned in and kissed him. It was a long kiss, and Quill welcomed it eagerly. It felt nice. He wanted to melt into the kiss . . .
The man’s jaw dropped, and so did his sandwich. They were more disgusting than he thought! They were GAY?! That wasn’t even allowed for humans! These really were devils in disguise!
The man stood up with force and then walked over to where Sol and Quill sat. This had to end. Now.
“Disgusting!” he yelled. Sol’s eyes snapped open and he pulled away from Quill and saw the man directly behind Quill. Others nearby turned to look as well, confused on what was going on.
“Pardon?”
Quill also turned to see who was yelling, heavy concern on his face. A feeling of dread started to hover.
“What are the likes of YOU doing here?! I tolerated you two sitting here acting like humans, but then you’re trying to push your gayness on others too, and convincing others that you’re just a-okay and the same as us humans! REVOLTING.”
“Sir, please calm d-“
“I won’t have any of this bullcrap going on in MY town! You beasts aren’t welcome here, got it?! GET OUT!”
Sol looked completely shocked, but his attention quickly went to Quill, who looked absolutely terrified now. His eyes were wide, tears forming, and his body was beginning to shake.
“Don’t play those crocodile tears with me, demon!” The man reached out as if he was going to grab Quill. Sol snapped, lunging out his hand to intercept the guy’s wrist.
“Don’t you fucking DARE touch him,” Sol said with venom in his voice. He squeezed down on the man’s wrist.
“O-ow ow let go, beast!”
Sol squeezed harder, but then threw him away, causing him to fall to the ground. Others gasped while watching on.
“I don’t know who the fuck you are, but you better shut the HELL up and leave us be!” Sol was standing now, towering over the pathetic man.
“What’s going on here?!” The owner of the café came out, as well as Tom, who stayed behind him. “Sol, what did you do?!”
Sol glared at the man on the ground, not looking away.
“See?! They are just demons! The devil’s henchmen! Kill them! Burn them!! Before they get to your children!”
Before anyone could respond, Quill got up and ran, completely panicked. It was all happening again . . . Nothing has changed! Tears rolled down his cheeks as he weaved around people trying to get to the nearest exit.
“There he goes!! Don’t let him get—“ A punch rained down on the guy from Sol, knocking him out. His attention instantly went back to Quill.
“Quill! Come back! SHIT.” Sol put a hand under his shawl getting his wallet from an un-seen pocket. He sifted out a few $20’s, far more than the food cost, and placed it on the table. He left, leaving everyone else to deal with the bastard.
--
“Quill, where are you? Please respond!” Sol called out as he got out of the town. It was dark out, but Sol could see just fine. He knew Quill couldn’t (or barely), however.
“Quill, please—“ Sol could then hear a soft sobbing not too far away. He ran towards the sound, and soon enough he found Quill crying directly under a tree, which was being held up by its roots. “Quill . . .”
Quill shook horribly as he held himself. He couldn’t stop crying. Sol pushed his way under the tree to be with him, which got Quill to close the gap and clung to Sol and cried harder.
It took several minutes of crying before Quill was able to calm down. Sol held him close, not saying anything, but purred.
“I . . . I’m sorry . . . for running away . . .” Quill said.
“Shh, it’s okay. You didn’t do anything wrong.”
“. . . He didn’t like us.”
Sol fell quiet for a little bit, then softly spoke up, “I know. I’ve never seen him before, so I don’t know what his problem is.”
“You promised . . .”
“Quill . . . I know. I really didn’t think anything would happen. Nothing has happened before. He must have been new to the nearby church. Then again I haven’t interacted with them before. I’m so sorry you had to go through that. We don’t have to go there anymore.”
Quill stayed silent again, so did Sol. They sat there for a little bit, until Quill moved.
“ . . . I’m ready to go home now.”
They walked the way back to their home; Sol making sure Quill didn’t trip on anything. They stayed silent the whole way. It was rather late now, so no one else was out at the village.
Sol locked the door behind them once they entered, and then Quill embraced him, bringing him into a strong kiss, in which Sol did not fight against. Fresh tears rolled over his cheeks, but he pulled back and smiled. “I did enjoy the date. I want you to know that. And . . . I want to do other things like that with you. Maybe not at that place . . . for a while, but I really did enjoy it.”
Sol kissed him again, and kept his head close. “I will keep you safe wherever we go. I won’t let anyone harm you. That’s a promise. We’ll have other fun dates and no one can stop us.”
To be continued.
Finally the next part is done! I was able to do this as homework for my Advanced illustration class. We were told to update one of the pieces we did earlier this semester, so I asked if I could make a part 2 instead, and I was given the okay~
So this is the "first part": https://www.furaffinity.net/view/21147337/
Though as you can see from the story, Quill wouldn't have that expression anymore. xD; But it still mainly fits!
I don't think the next part should take as long to get to, since this is my last week of this semester~
Enjoy!

Enjoy!
