I think it's the shadow on/around them combined with the fact that the expression is an intense wide eyed stare at the viewer. It's kind of reminiscent of the overly attached girlfriend meme. I'm curious if it would fix it to leave the eyes alone and make the grin smaller and/or less turned up at the corners. The other thing to try might be leaving the eyes the same size but making a bit of eyelid visible.
Haha that's a lot better with the smile toned down. It's amazing how much of a difference small changes make when it comes to facial expressions.
Also I'm really glad you like the new icon, I found an app for drawing on my phone and decided to give drawing a try :3 I probably couldn't have done it without lots of looking at various renditions of my character (the ones by you and Star in particular) to figure out how to make it look like something more than some squished ovals on a stick :D

Yep, I didn't know you could draw on a phone either until like a week ago. The small screen means there's lots of pinch zooming and moving the image around. That also forces the lineart to be done in small short strokes, which I actually kind of like because it gives them a sort of fuzzy appearance (it's more apparent in the higher res version in my gallery). I've never attempted digital art before this week, and the only traditional art experience I have is a semester of charcoal drawing in college, so the small screen doesn't bother me since I don't know any better. I suspect it may feel claustrophobic to people used to a tablet and fully featured drawing program though.
I had some difficulties with that kind of thing too and i can give you a great tip, (i'll try to explain as well as i can english is not my main language) but the best trick here is to make the top black line a little ticker on the iris, here, i'll note you a picture for you to understand better.
