Pokemon games have never been hard, though. They're made to be beatable by children who've never played before.
I deliberately stayed on level/slightly under level for the whole thing and delayed in the totem battles enough to see the mechanics (ally alomomola sure was something), and that was enough self-imposed challenge to make it satisfying.
